El Estado Mundial de la Infancia 2007 analiza la discriminación y la falta de poder que sufren las mujeres a lo largo de sus vidas y describe lo que se debe hacer para eliminar la discriminación de género y promover la autonomía de las mujeres y las niñas. Comienza por examinar la situación de la mujer, y luego analiza la forma en que la igualdad de género serviría para impulsar los Objetivos de Desarrollo del Milenio, y cómo la inversión en los derechos de la mujer podría producir, en última instancia, un doble dividendo: avanzar los derechos tanto de las mujeres como de los niños y niñas.

Women’s empowerment key to achieving UN’s goals, says Ban Ki-moon
3 October 2007 – Stressing that the empowerment of women is vital to achieving peace and security, improved living standards and respect for human rights, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has underscored the need to support the work of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
“Today, we understand, even better than our founders did, that the empowerment of women is a fundamental condition if we are to make progress towards the goals for which the United Nations was created,” Mr. Ban said at last night’s Americans for UNFPA Gala for the Health and Dignity of Women.
He noted that too many women die during pregnancy and childbirth because their right to sexual and reproductive health is denied; too many women become infected with HIV because they do not have the power to protect their own health; and too many women are subjected to violence – “one of the most systematic and prevalent human rights abuses in the world.”
All of this underscored the importance of UNFPA’s efforts, he said. “This work needs to be understood. And it needs to be supported.”
He encouraged Americans for UNFPA to continue their support for this vital UN agency, adding that by doing so they are “contributing directly to the health and dignity of women in nations all over the world.”
Last night’s event honoured four Americans from the media, financial and political fields along with women from Niger, Mongolia and Cambodia for combining passion and entrepreneurship with social responsibility to advance the health and dignity of women.
The group honoured Ted Turner, who Mr. Ban called “one of the staunchest allies of the United Nations and of women around the world,” with its Lifetime Achievement Award.

my attacker and i have been together 11 years never abusive due to a medication he was started on and alcohol he had a severe reaction and doesnt remember anything i was stabbed 6 times had major surgery and nearly lost my life he hasnt frank since and no longer takes the medication this was on 4/26/2007 the court system has refused to let us have any contact with each other we had just bought a house and were planning on getting married i did not press charges i know it was directly related to the combination of the above as he would never in his right mind hurt me or anyone else as of now im homeless jobless and dont know where to turn i am a nurse and the stress of all this has prevented me from returning to work i am asking for some help or advice on what to do next i feel like a victim all over again

Este jueves dio inicio la campaña Viajamos seguras. Acoso Cero, en la que el Gobierno del Distrito Federal junto con Inmujeres del DF y con el apoyo del Instituto de la Juventud capitalino pretenden realizar acciones
institucionalizadas coordinadas, desde un enfoque de género entre los organismos de transporte público, seguridad pública y procuración de justicia para que las mujeres viajen "más seguras y libres de violencia".
En el evento, el jefe de gobierno del DF, Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón dijo que la "complacencia y tolerancia al abuso, consecuencia de la forma de pensar de nuestra sociedad" infieren en la posterior violencia sufrida por las mujeres.
"Los varones ya no tenemos que dar por sentado que los cuerpos de las mujeres nos pertenecen, por supuesto que no", afirmó el jefe de gobierno.
"Los que tenemos que poner el ejemplo somos los varones, vamos a cambiar la cosa. Tenemos que cambiar la cultura, persuadir y cambiar al individuo, ese
es un tipo de acción, el otro es para el señor que no entendió, que cree
que estamos jugando, se va a meter en problemas serios, porque es un delito, porque hay persuasión, pero también sanción", aseguró el titular del GDF.
La ley considera al "manoseo", como un delito menor, sin embargo este se agrava si se comete en transporte público y puede ser castigado con penas que van de los tres a seis años de prisión.
Por su parte, Marta Lucía Michel Camarena, directora de Inmujeres dijo que se tomarán acciones inmediatas, iniciando con la campaña de difusión en
todas las líneas del metro, la red trolebuses y el metrobús.
Aseguró que se creará una base de datos para capturar los delitos contra mujeres en el transporte público, así como la implantación de dos autobuses piloto exclusivos para mujeres en Paseo de la Reforma, y el aumento de un
vagón exclusivo para mujeres en los trenes del Metro donde ya se lleva a cabo este sistema.

I am a 29yr old Mother of four Wonderful Children, my children are my life, my heart and soul, my everything. My two oldest Daughters are from a previous relationship of five years and I also have two children with my husdband, a boy and a girl. Does anyone know what it feels like for a mother to have turned to the state for help against the abusive father of your two oldest daughters but instead it ended up being the biggest mistake of your life because instead of recieving the help that you had been seeking your daughters are ripped away from you and given to the man that had been both physically and mentally abusive, the man that only wants to be able to control and hurt you and has now been given the power to emotionally destroy you. I use to be a strong believer in that ole saying, The truth shall set you free and as long as you tell the truth you have nothing to worry about,never did I think that it would be possible for someone to be able to get to the Judge and fill!
there head full of nothing but lies and no matter what you did, how hard you tried or what evidence you had, the Judges mind had already been made. Denied of all rights and ever since my life as well as my Daughters lives has been nothing but a Emotional Traumatizing Roller Coaster, I know that my Daughters need to recieve counseling and their father will not follow through seeking the help that they need even know that the state would be the ones paying for it. The only thing standing in my way in going to court is my financial situation as well as yes I am a little affraid of going back in frount of a Judge that has already made me well aware of her feeling towards and I am not sure if the Hate could be changed in her mind....

Thank you for this great resource. My beautiful 19 year old daughter was recently raped and it has turned her world/our world upside down. I have been using much of your material to encourage her and help prepare her for the next steps.

Partido Socialista de Madrid.

Hola, yo soy argentina y desde el 28 de marzo del 2007 estoy viviendo con mi marido y mis dos hijos aqui en los estados unidos,no se si mi caso es lo suficientemente grave pero uno de los ninios es mi hijo de soltera y mi pareja no es su padre y hace unos dias mi hijo fue suspendido de su escuela por un dia por usar malas palabras y pelear, y mi pareja le dio una fuerte paliza, lo arrastro en la vereda, le marco la espalda y le pateo el estomago y luego se lo piso, y el chico estuvo mal todo el dia, mi hijo se llama Jose y tiene 10 anios y en dos ocasiones anteriores le pego, pero fueron golpes en la cola, nada grave, pero lo de esta semana me preocupa mucho, y tiengo miedo de una proxima vez, el usa palabras despectivas todo el tiempo conmigo y mi hijo... y temo por mi pequenio hijo cuando crezca porque el es el padre y se siente con derechos y me quita todo derecho a mi sobre ambos ninios porque el es el que provee para la casa, yo no puedo trabajar legalmente porque aun !
no tengo mi licencia para trabajar y estoy tramitando mis papeles de residente, que mi pareja me ayuda con ellos,y no se que puedo hacer en mi caso, es grave o no? si alguien puede darme un consejo.

hola tengo 34 anos casada con ciudadano , fui victima de violencia domestica al mes de entrar a usa en la florida tengo un ano y medio de casada, denuncie y se lo llevaron preso, huy a nj con ayuda de la familia de mi esposo con mi hija de 14 anos, nunca mas he sabido de mi esposo somos residentes permanentes por dos anos, me gustaria saber a que tenemos derecho al divorciarme y cual sera mi estado legal en el pais, por favor necesito un consejo estoy aun asustada esto paso el 9 mayo 07

Soy victima de violencia domestica, experimentè todos los tipos de violencia, mi ex-esposo me quitò mi dinero mis bienes y me dejò en la calle sin nada, me obligò a realizar creditos por lo que en este momento la casa de mi padre se encuentra en riesgo pues no puedo pagar la hipoteca que realice para pagar todos las deudas de él, estoy desesperada solo tengo una semana para cancelar , por favor sime pueden ayudar, todo lo anterior esta documentado, tengo dictamen mèdico de la golpiza que me propinò, recibo terapia desde hace tres años, en este momento estoy desesperada, tengo un niño de 6 años y no se que va a pasar con nosotros

President Ortega Should Show Leadership by Protecting Women's Lives
(Managua, October 2, 2007) – Nicaragua's blanket ban on abortion, which criminalizes life-saving medical treatment, has had a devastating impact on women's health and lives, Human Rights Watch said today in the first-ever report on the human rights consequences of the ban, which was enacted in November 2006.
The new report, "Over Their Dead Bodies," documents how this ban on abortion has made women afraid to seek even legal health services. Fearing prosecution under the new law, doctors are unwilling to provide necessary care. The report is based on interviews with officials, doctors from the public and private health systems, women in need of health services, and family members of women who died as a result of the ban.
"Doctors in Nicaragua are now afraid to provide even legal health services to pregnant women," said Angela Heimburger, Americas researcher at Human Rights Watch's Women's Rights Division. "Some testified that personnel at public hospitals refused women and girls adequate care after devastating miscarriages, with direct reference to the ban."
In December, one month after Congress enacted the ban during a hotly contested presidential election, the Ministry of Health responded by issuing detailed mandatory protocols on emergency obstetric care, including guidelines for medical treatment after illegal abortions. Ministry officials admit that they have received complaints of delay or denial of health services since the ban was implemented.
However, the report reveals that the President Daniel Ortega's government so far has not studied the health effects of the ban on abortion. The government also does not appear to have investigated or sanctioned health professionals who do not implement the mandatory protocols.
"President Ortega should immediately help mitigate the disastrous effects of this ban by prioritizing pregnant women's access to emergency medical care," said Heimburger. "Nicaragua's president needs to reassure women they will not be punished for trying to stay alive. At the same time, he should aggressively promote public awareness and access to services."
Before this ban, Nicaragua's penal code allowed abortions when a woman's life was at risk. This new law intentionally denies women access to health services essential to saving their lives, and is thus inconsistent with Nicaragua's obligations under international human rights law to ensure women's right to life.

Tengo un problema con mi hermana, muy grave, no se que hacer. Hace aproximadamente como 7 anos que me vine de Mexico a E.U con mi mama, porque mi papa ya estaba aqui y mi hermana era muy pequena, se tuvo que quedar en Mexico, yo tenia 15 en ese entonces y ella tenia 11.
Mi mama regreso a Mexico despues de estar aqui un ano y pues eso fue en el 2002.
Ahora el ano pasado mi hermana vino de Mexico y es una alcoholica, mi mama la mando para aca porque penso que se iba a componer y pues hasta la fecha no lo hace. como no boy a comprender a mi hermanita, con esto que me acaba de contar hace unos dias...
Le encontre una carta de su diario y la lei.
Decia claramente que un familiar le hizo algo cuando solo tenia 10 anos. Ese desgraciado tenia en ese entonces 14 o 15 anos y ahora tambien creo que ese va a ser un obstaculo para poder llevar a cabo una demanda.
Tengo un coraje contra esa persona y resulto ser un primo que tambien esta aqui en EU.
Mi hermana no puede olvidar lo que le paso y lo peor es que no se si tenga derecho a meter a la carcel a esa persona, pues ya pasaron muchos anos, ahora ella tiene 18 anos, no puede dejar el alcohol, se fue de mi casa porque la reganaba mucho por tomar, ahora me siento culpable porque ella tiene razon en haberse metido en el alcohol para olvidar de cierta manera lo que le paso.
Por favor si alguien me puede orientar a que puedo hacer en este caso porfavor comuniquese conmigo.

I just wanted to thank you for having this site and so well maintained. I graduated last year from the university and before I could graduate I needed to do a research paper. As a survivor of DV I chose that theme. My professor was worried but I insisted on doing it and used this site as one of my resources. I found the link in my "favorites" tonight and was curious and then delighted to see that the site is still up and running.
To my dear sisters, fellow survivors, I am praying for all of you that things will get better for you. Especially the mothers who are fighting to get their children back. Don't give up hope and never look bacck, remember why you left in the first place. (((Gentle Hugs)))
